Regulating Heat Islands (2023)

Identifying Land Development Regulations as Mitigation Techniques

Parcel 04-31-17-81540-030-0090 Analysis

The Urban Heat Island Effect is a growing concern in many cities around the world, and even small towns, as the climate of our planet continues to change. Completed as part of the degree requirements for the Master of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Florida, I focused this thesis project on the crossroads of sustainability and land use in modern day cities with the topic of urban heat islands. In this thesis, I explore the pre-established intersectionality of land use and the urban heat island effect as a possible way to bring forward new mitigation techniques focused on land development regulations.

Mid Cape Village (2023)

Cape Coral Canal Policy & Urban Design Redevelopment Plan

Cape Coral Project Overview

As sea level rise, climate change, and historic practices of urban sprawl begin to bear more impact on our built environments, cities like Cape Coral are begining to see many adverse impacts in everyday life and especially during naturally occuring events like hurricanes. As part of an ubran planning and design studio at the University of Florida, I worked with students from across different disciplines - including architecture, landscape arhcitecture, and journalism - to analyize the lasting impacts of 2022's Hurricane Ian on the Cape Coral area. GIS systems, historic data, data from the hurricane, site vists, and interactions with residents were all considered as we were tasked with establishing a node of community activity that would redirect future development in Cape Coral out of harms way from sea level rise and hurricanes while increasing density, sustainability, and qulaity of life. While a multi-facitied project, I personally was most involved in the policy aspects of the project shown here in my portfolio. The Financial Implications of Gainesville RTS Electrification (2021)

Case Study

Gainesville RTS Bus

Electric vehicles are continuing to become more common place, but electricfied busses are not a new concept; however, whereas overhead electrification requires more upfront infrstartuctre, battery electric busses do not, opening the door for smaller transit agencies to electrify. Completed for the Transportation Policy & Planning course at the University of Florida, I explore the financial benefits that battery bus electrification can have for transit providers. I specifically focus on the Gainesville Regional Transit System in Florida.

George F. Young, Inc. (2021)

Internship Overview

GFY Internship (2021)

Internships provide supplemental experience to education and research in unique ways. My internships through George F. Young did just that. I had the oppurtunity to work on a range of large scale land planning projects down to small scale subdivsion replats for one or two residential lots. I not only experienced planning, but worked closely with engineers, landscape architects, clients, and municipalities which has led me to a better understanding of the overall design and development process with the unique lens of a planner.
